To mark the 500th anniversary of the Salzburg Peasants' War, Fortress Hohenwerfen was transformed into a stage for "The Uprising" on June 21, 2025: a collective, participatory theater event that brings history to life and into the present day.
While a large-scale scenic reconstruction of the historical peasant uprising takes place in the castle courtyard, all visitors can simultaneously experience a digital world live on their own mobile phones: social media from the time of the Peasants' War!
Fictional news reports, comments, rumors, leaflets, and memes from 1525 are broadcast in real time via various channels. This creates an immersive, multifaceted view of the events and atmosphere of that era—and of our own media culture.
Participate, experience, comment: The audience is part of the action, both at the castle and in the digital realm. Historical figures suddenly become influencers on Instagram, WhatsApp, and other platforms—and history continues to unfold live.
