The Yellow King
Experimental text adventure
by Patrrick Borgeat, Georg Hobmeier and James Patton
“You go to hit the window. You hear a noise outside the door: a doctor or a nurse shuffling.
You realize you'd better not. They might lock you away forever if you're violent. You look out the window.”
A room, a bedside table, a window, a door that is locked, a bed, a picture on the wall opposite and the regular visits of a nurse. From these sparse components, a surreal, disturbing adventure develops in Yellow King, in which the protagonist constantly searches for new freedoms and finds them where he is not looking.
Consider This A Beginning
TTText is a testing ground for non-linear texts generated procedurally and by artificial intelligence. In 2023, Dreamshores (working title: Your Highness) was already published in TTText with great success on itch.io.
The King in Yellow (1895) is a collection of short stories by Robert W. Chambers, which are considered the forerunners of modern horror literature due to their eerie themes and motifs. The adventure game The Yellow King turns it into an interactive story: Like the characters in Chambers' stories, players take on the perspective of people operating on the mental precipice. Their decisions in the “choose-your-own-adventure” allow them to enter these abysses, which are constantly being regenerated. The Yellow King will be playable via mobile and desktop web browsers.
The game is based on real events, but all medications are taken daily.
