On June 24, 2025, we had the opportunity to participate in the KinderUNI (Children's University) in Hallein with our mentoring project WE ARE. This year's theme was "Reach for the Stars". There was a lot happening all day on the Halleiner Pernerinsel: In the morning, schoolchildren could earn a Children's University diploma, and in the afternoon, all interested children were invited to experiment, play, paint, and discover new things.
How do sound and music make digital games more exciting and fun?
We had a sound station. Musician, game audio designer, and music educator Paula Langthaler explained and demonstrated how sounds for video games are actually created. The children were especially excited about imitating footsteps in snow using cornstarch or mimicking the bubbling of magic potions with straws. We created live sound effects for stories, learned how to distinguish footsteps going up and down stairs (and how to perform them on a wooden box with leather shoes), and discovered how the same video game scene can feel very different with different types of music: sad, silly, or scary.
The workshop was announced with the following text:
Beeping, crashing, and fanfares: Sounds, tones, and music – the so-called soundscape – make digital games exciting and fun. We will experiment with joy, capture sounds, and immediately try them out in games. We are curious to see how the character of the game changes with different sounds.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire KinderUNI-team and are very happy that we were able to inspire so many curious children in the Salzburg region with our offering on that day.
