Film Lab AI – Critical Creativity with Artificial Intelligence
A collaborative research project with students from WRG Salzburg and gold extra
How does artificial intelligence change our understanding of creativity, authorship, and reality? What aesthetic possibilities does it offer – and what ethical questions does it raise?
In the FILM LAB AI project, students from WRG Salzburg collaborate with the artist group gold extra to explore these questions. Over several months, cinematic miniatures are created in which AI is not only a technical tool, but also a creative sparring partner, an aesthetic provocation, and a societal topic.
The project combines artistic practice, technical experimentation, and critical media literacy. Using tools such as ChatGPT, Midjourney, LumaLabs, or Suno, the students develop their own stories, characters, scenes, and soundtracks. In doing so, they learn how current AI systems work, what their capabilities and limitations are – and simultaneously reflect on their social impact: Who trains these systems? What images and narratives do they reproduce? And what happens to our idea of "genuine" creativity?
Film Lab AI is also part of gold extra’s ongoing research on AI in performative and immersive theater formats. Working with the students opens up new perspectives on the creative use of AI – particularly in the field of tension between individual expressiveness, collective collaboration, and machine-generated content. The insights gained directly inform the group’s upcoming AI theater projects.
In terms of content and form, the cinematic results move between dream logic and pop culture references, between dystopian visions of the future and personal engagement with digital realities. The project is supported by teacher Tina Kubek as well as the artists from gold extra. The results will be presented and reflected upon together with all participants in spring 2025.
