Sonja Prlić is a media artist, director, dramaturge and artistic researcher. Her studies led her via literature at the University of Vienna and dramaturgy at the Hessian Theater Academy in Frankfurt am Main to artistic computer games at the Focus Area Science and Art (University Mozarteum and University of Salzburg), where she completed the inter-university doctoral program Art and the Public.
In 1998 she co-founded the artists' group gold extra and has since been working on projects between theater, new media and computer games. Her interests include the development of new artistic forms for documentary computer games and the potential of artistic computer games for social and political dialogue. Her artistic research dissertation in this field received the Award of Excellence. She has received awards for her artistic work such as the Dramatikerstipendium of the Republic of Austria, the Outstanding Artist Award, the Salzburg Media Art Award and the International Main Award for Art and Culture of the Salzburg Cultural Fund.
From 2018 to 2022, she organized the research project schnitt # stellen at the University Mozarteum Salzburg, researching the synergies of young people's everyday media cultural experiences and contemporary media art. She is co-director of the Contemporary Art and Cultural Production program area at the Cooperation Center for Science and Art, Salzburg.
