gate # ways is an interdisciplinary project that integrates perspectives from artistic research and media art, as well as from cultural and media education research.
The project focuses on the interactions and potential synergies between the media-cultural environments of adolescents attending a new urban middle school and the field of contemporary media art.
The goal of this interdisciplinary collaboration is to open up a multi-perspective view of the field, drawing on insights gained through various methodological approaches.
This central research question guides the process: What experiences are gained, and what developments occur in the collaborative creative, presentation, and research processes involving students at an urban NMS and media artists?
Perspective of Artistic Research (Sonja Prlić und Karl Zechenter)
From the perspective of artistic research, we are interested in the shared experiences that emerge and the aesthetic repertoires and media practices that develop when young people, artists, and art institutions come together.
In artistic research with children and young people, media art has received little attention to date; however, we consider this approach particularly fruitful precisely because of the close connection between media art practices and youth culture. At the center of our research are two one-year artistic projects that provide the framework within which we explore different focal points—such as play, aesthetics, and the use of social media—and reflect on them both collaboratively with the project participants and from an academic perspective.
A particular focus is on the study of video games and interactive applications—such as augmented reality technologies.
THE TRUTH Part 2
As a first-year school project, students at NMS Lehen developed the mixed reality game *THE TRUTH PART 2*, which was presented on June 4 at ARGEkultur Salzburg.

Perspectives in Cultural and Media Education Research (Iwan Pasuchin)
This research perspective focuses on the question of how the interest and engagement of students at an urban NMS are affected when media artists collaborate with them on projects that primarily aim to build on their existing experiences with media culture.
The results will be compared with those of the predecessor project, “Artistic Experience in Focus,” in which the team had already collaborated at the same school through shorter workshops. This is expected to yield insights into the modifications and further developments that occur at the structural, content-related, and methodological levels of lesson design when media artists carry out year-long school projects that are explicitly conceived as artistic research initiatives.
